The DIY Files: 1950s Tailored Junior Black Confetti Party Dress

Sometimes on my buying trips I run into some of the most beautiful vintage, but it is not always in the most stellar condition.  In the case of this little 1950s gem by Tailored Junior, I could not resist grabbing it in spite of a failed inspection of loose seams and poor fabric conditions.  I just loved the round gathered collar, the full skirt, cap sleeves, and that cute festive confetti print on black background; so needless to say, it was hard to put it down, and I didn't. So onto the list of issues:

1. There was an obviously crude attempt at fixing what may have been a seam tear on the right side of the bodice.

2. The original belt is missing, which is not the worst thing, but it does mean an additional investment in either finding an appropriate replacement or just taking a price cut for not selling it with one. There are also a few loose seams at the waist of the skirt area.

3. Now, this is the worst part of all, there is a tear in the fabric right where the rear armpit and the back of the dress meet. This is the most obvious and troublesome damage because it does not line up to a seam and could be the end of this piece all together.

There will also be an additional costs for making sure that this item is re-salable such as an appointment to the cleaners to brighten the fabric. So what is a vintage seller to do when they run into a piece like this? Well if you like a challenge like I do, then you find yourself adopting pieces like this and figuring out how you can salvage it and bring it back to the full gorgeous life we know it still has in it. So here are few major tools you must have:
  • A Sewing Machine,
  • Needle and matching thread for the simpler solutions,
  • Gentle cleaning solutions such as Shout, Woolite, and Biz,
  • Rust remover in case of difficult brown stains, I prefer WINK products, and
  • A little bit of skill in the ways of design, because that big rip in the middle of the fabric may not be salvageable otherwise.
If you don't have any of the above materials or even the patience to deal with this project, then you must have the following handy:
  • A great Dry Cleaners that understands clothing restoration and has a reputation for being AWESOME at bringing textiles back to life safely and
  • A wonderful seamstress who is not only talented at fixing seam tears and hems, but just talented PERIOD, because that tear is probably going to need a re-design and a good pair of capable hands.
Due to that challenging tear, I may have to do a combination of both DIY and professional assistance, with a pre-soak in the lab, a visit to my cleaner, and a visit to my seamstress. So stay tuned kiddies as I follow - up on the status of our little DIY project of the month.

Do you have any DIY projects that you would like to share with us? Do you have any vintage clothing repair or cleaning tips? If so, leave a comment or a link, we would love to hear your ideas.

Vintage Picture Book: Emilio Pucci

Worn by countless celebrities and socialites, Emilio Pucci's designs and geometric color schemes would change fashion from the staid color and designs of World War II; thus bringing forth a bolder more imaginative form of textile and design that was then and even now highly regarded as "artful fashion". Pucci clothing are still in distribution today, but guarantee that anything vintage is not only considered to be a classic, but also "highly collectible".

The Late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in Pucci Sunnies - circa late 60s early 70s

Actress Jane Fonda wearing Pucci - circa late 60s

Marilyn Monroe's Sherbet Colored Pucci Blouse - sold at Auction for a record $19,000.00

Do you remember....

Do you rememeber where you were when you saw Madonna perform "Like a Virgin" on the first MTV Music Award in 1984? Well I was glued to the tv set trying to figure out how I was going to get my mom to make her whole outift for my next Halloween costume. It was head to toe love at first sight; especially with that iconic BOYTOY belt.....

Vintage Picture Book: Do YOU Know Pat Cleveland?

Maybe you know Naomi, even Tyra. We all know IMAN and you probably even know about Beverly, but do you know Pat? I'm talking about the ultimate 70s model diva, Pat Cleveland! She was best friend and partner of crime to American designer, Roy Halston and the long and leggy fashion muse to the disco era's most talented photographers and fashion designers alike.

While her star burned its hautest during the 70s, she has not fallen through the cracks of this generations dalliance with era envy. She has been featured in a number of recent fashion mags and has spawned a new generation of model with her daughter, Anna van Ravenstein's debut into the runway business. Brava to one of the most beautiful faces of the 70s disco decade, Ms. Pat Cleveland.

Vintage Picture Book: 1960 - 1970 Pierre Cardin

Truth is, sometimes even a highly accomplished, college degreed English major like myself just wants to look at the pictures. Especially if they are shots of bright, fascinating, and fantastically mod photos of vintage Pierre Cardin collections from the 60s and 70s. Absolutely yummy!

Vintage Inspiration: Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s by Rian Hughes

I love artistic interpretations of the way people used to live. In the follow-up to his last book, Lifestyle Illustration of the 50s, author Rian Hughes curates over 5oo pages worth of 60s styled lifestyle images rich with the colors and textures of the sweet and swinging era. Below are a few samples of these artistic pieces.

What I find most interesting about this set of illustrations are the way in which the female subjects are free in their personal choices, they are thinkers, they are energetic strivers, they are sexual provocateurs, they are self possessed, and fashionable.  All of  these signs and symbols of a time of lasting and deep change in our social fabric; a time of youth inspired liberation.  This book is a grand celebration of talent and the artist who captured a time that would re-define America as we knew it forever.

Vintage Girl Group Crush: BLONDIE

Ok, so I know that BLONDIE is not a girl group persay, but they certainly had one helluva front woman in Deborah Harry. This tough as nails sex kitten was the best of both worlds; hot and haute!!! She rates high on my list of rock divas as one of the most innovative and influential pre - 80s rock muscians bar - none. Additionally, the band lead by guitarist Chris Stein, was the perfect union of new wave and punk laced with a little bit of disco, pop, rap, and raggae. With hits such as Call Me and Rapture, this band would leave its punk rock pop foot print on the world of American Rock and Roll.

For all of the Gwen Stefani's and Lady Gaga's of the world, it begins and ends with Deborah Harry.  She was the Queen of the safety pin turned clothing notion, the mother of all things stripped, ripped, and rugged.  Platinum blonde and fierce, her rocka-billy meets punk princess was a massive fashionable hit and she would turn the Studio 54 world into a glamorous disco of dolled up punk vixens with a touch of Marilyn Monroe foxiness.  She dripped talent and most of all she created fashion out of truth and nothing she did was contrived.  She is still and will always be one of the most fashionable divas of rock and roll.
